How to calculate 3D printing prices

Pricing 3D prints correctly is what separates those who make money from those who just keep the machine busy. The calculation has five components most beginners miss — and the calculator above handles all of them for you.

  1. 01

    Material cost (filament or resin)

For FDM printers (filament), calculate part weight in grams × price per gram of the spool. For resin (SLA/MSLA), use volume in milliliters × price per liter. EiPrint 3D comes with several materials pre-loaded — PLA, PETG, ABS, standard and engineering resins — you just pick one and enter the weight or volume.

  2. 02

    Electricity cost

Multiply the printer's power (in kW) by the print time (in hours) and by your local kWh rate. If you don't know the exact rate, divide your last bill total by the kWh consumption — the result already includes taxes and surcharges.

  3. 03

    Failures and maintenance

Not every print succeeds on the first try. Apply a failure percentage (2–10% is typical, depending on your machine's stability) and a monthly maintenance value (cleaning, part replacements, bed leveling). This covers prints that fail halfway and need reprinting.

  4. 04

    Machine ROI

This is the component most people forget. The printer cost money and needs to pay for itself. Enter the machine value, desired payback period, and daily print hours — EiPrint 3D calculates the cost per hour and distributes it automatically across every quote. Without this, you're printing for free on behalf of the machine.

  5. 05

    Profit margin and paint

Set your margin freely. In the 3D printing market, unpainted prints typically sit between 40% and 80% above production cost; with artistic paint, margins above 100% are common and sustainable. The calculator delivers three values — Production, No Paint, and With Paint — so you can close the quote with exactly the price you want to show the client.

All these calculations are available in the calculator above, for free. If you want to save quotes, build your own material catalog, and keep a history with part photos, the EiPrint 3D Android app and web version have everything synced — no spreadsheets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about 3D printing pricing

  • How to calculate 3D printing prices?

Pricing 3D prints correctly involves five components: material cost (filament or resin), electricity cost, failure and maintenance rate, machine investment return (ROI), and profit margin. The calculator above handles all of them automatically — enter the part weight, print time, printer power and material price and get three quote values in seconds.

  • What goes into the cost of a 3D print?

The production cost of a 3D print is made up of: material (filament g × $/kg or resin mL × $/L), electricity (kW × hours × $/kWh), monthly maintenance (cleaning, parts and bed leveling), machine depreciation (ROI spread per print hour), consumables (solvent, gloves, FEP) and a failure rate to cover reprints.

  • How do I calculate electricity cost for 3D printing?

Multiply the printer's power in kW by the print time in hours and by your electricity rate per kWh. Example: 150W printer (0.15 kW), 10 hours, rate of $0.15/kWh = $0.23 in energy. If you don't know the exact rate, divide your total bill by the kWh consumption — the result already includes taxes.

  • What is the ideal profit margin for 3D printing?

The ideal margin for unfinished 3D prints typically falls between 40% and 80% above production cost. With artistic paint or premium finishing, margins above 100% are common and sustainable. The right margin depends on your niche (miniatures, technical parts, decor), local competition and your pricing position.

  • Does the calculator work for filament and resin printers?

Yes. The calculator supports FDM (filament) and SLA/MSLA (resin). For filament, use weight in grams and price per kg. For resin, use volume in milliliters and price per liter. You can switch between the two types in the technology field and the fields adjust automatically.

  • Do I need to create an account to use the free calculator?

No. The calculator is 100% free and runs directly in the browser, no sign-up or credit card required. The calculation is done on your own device. To save quotes, build a model catalog with photos and keep cloud history, you need an account in the EiPrint 3D Android app.

  • What is EiPrint 3D?

EiPrint 3D is a management and pricing platform for makers and 3D printing workshops. Beyond this free calculator, there is an Android app with an item catalog, material management, sales panel and cloud history. The Premium plan includes access to the web app with analysis and quote-sharing features.

  • What is the difference between the Android app and the EiPrint 3D web version?

The Android app (free to download) focuses on mobile operation: calculating prices, recording sales, managing materials and browsing the catalog with photos. The web version (exclusive for Premium subscribers) adds large-screen analysis features: side-by-side quote comparison, margin and revenue dashboards, advanced history search and shareable quote links.

  • Is data synced between the Android app and the web app?

Yes. The EiPrint 3D account is unified and syncs materials, quotes, catalog and sales history in real time between the Android app and the web app. Sync works on any internet-connected device.
